On a bright Memorial Day weekend, the Adapt community witnessed an inspiring comeback as Collin Bosse, a cherished member and avid surfer, made his long-awaited return to the ocean. More than a year ago, Collin suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury that challenged his future in surfing—a sport he's passionately pursued since childhood. However, with indomitable spirit and relentless dedication, Collin rode the waves once again, proving that the strength of the human spirit can overcome the most daunting challenges.

The Journey Back to Surfing

Collin's journey back to surfing was not just a test of physical endurance but a profound demonstration of mental resilience. After the accident at Mission Bay, Collin faced a new reality with courage and an unwavering determination to surf again. Supported by his family, friends, and the teams at Adapt and Waves4All, he embarked on a rigorous rehabilitation regimen focused on building his upper body strength and adapting to his new physical capabilities.

Using a specially designed adaptive surfboard equipped with straps and foam cut-outs to enhance safety and stability, Collin experienced the thrill of surfing in a prone position. His return to the waves was nothing short of spectacular, catching about eight waves and rekindling his deep connection with the ocean. "Catching that first wave, it was amazing. It felt like I was home again," Collin shared, his joy palpable.

A Community of Support

Collin's achievement is a testament to the power of community and the support systems that are pivotal in navigating life's unexpected turns. His mother highlighted the overwhelming support from Adapt, noting, "He had so much help and support from his PT gym Adapt Movement and the group called Waves for All." This collaborative effort underscores our mission at Adapt to foster environments where barriers are transformed into new beginnings.

Beyond Surfing

Collin's resilience stretches beyond the waves. He has actively participated in projects that advocate for technological advancements for quadriplegics, contributing to a video for Google featuring innovative new software. Furthermore, his academic ambitions continue to burn bright as he has been accepted into two MBA programs. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of setting goals and pushing forward, regardless of the obstacles.
